Note: in the last frame of the animation above λ is the wavelength as measured
by the star (its "natural" wavelength), and λo is the wavelength as seen
by an external observer. This may be shorter (blue-shifted; object approaching)
or longer (red-shifted; object receding) than λ. Using the formulas derived we can solve
for the speed v with which the object is approaching or receding.
